Biography:
The conductor Alexander Liebreich, born in 1968, founded the Regensburg Chamber Choir in his hometown at the age of 17. He studied Romance languages and musicology at the University of Regensburg, singing and conducting at the Munich University of Music and Theater and at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Michael Gielen.
In 1996 he won the Kondraschin Prize in the Netherlands, named after the Russian conductor Kirill Kondraschin (1914-1981), and was assistant to Sir Colin Davis and Roberto Abbado at the Bavarian State Opera. Edo de Waart then brought him to the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Hilversum, with whom he performed a series of concerts in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Liebreich was a guest conductor with numerous renowned Dutch and European orchestras: e.g. Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchester National de Belgique, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. In autumn 2003 he was a guest professor at the University of Music and Dance in Pyongyang (North Korea) for the first time via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Alexander Liebreich has been chief conductor and artistic director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) since the 2006/07 season. Since 2011 he has been Artistic Director of the Tongyeong International Music Festival (TIMF) in South Korea. In December 2008 he was elected to the General Assembly of the Goethe-Institut. Together with the institute, Liebreich has initiated several cultural exchange programs in North Korea in recent years, most recently a one-week MKO academy in Pyongyang in November 2012 with music students from the local university.
Since the beginning of the 2012/13 season, Alexander Liebreich has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) based in Katowice, making him the first German chief conductor in Poland since 1945.
