Anton Webern

Composer

Biography:

Anton Webern, born in Vienna in 1883, was an enthusiastic Wagnerian in his youth and wanted to study with Hans Pfitzner, but then he met Arnold Schönberg, whose pupil he became in 1904. Within a few years, Webern became the most consistent new sounder in Vienna. In his case, the dissonant free tonality inevitably led to twelve tones, the extreme harmonic concentration of which resulted in aphoristic brevity. Like no other composer in history, he knew how to achieve maximum structure and expression in the smallest of spaces, and thus became the idol of the serial post-war avant-garde. His music combines the highest timbral and melodic sensitivity with crystalline clarity and severity. On September 15, 1945, Anton Webern was shot dead by an American soldier in Mittersill.
