Catherine Lamb

composer

Biography:

Catherine Lamb, born in the USA in 1982, is a composer who explores the interplay of elementary sound material and its gradations of presence between shades and essence in space. In 2003 she turned away from the university system and tried to understand the structures and intonations of classical north Indian Hindustani music. In 2006 she met Mani Kaul, who was in direct contact with Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, whose philosophical approach to sound became important to her.

From 2004 to 2006 she studied experimental composition at the California Institute of the Arts with James Tenney and Michael Pisaro. It was also there that she began her work in the field of pure intonation; this provided a clear way to explore the interplay of tones and ever-changing shades, and these interactions in themselves became structural elements of their music. She received her MFA from the Milton Avery School of Fine Arts at Bard College in 2012 and is currently based in Berlin.
