Biography:
The CHORWERK RUHR is one of the top ensembles in NRW and was founded in 1999 as a project of the regional cultural policy of NRW with the aim of building an ensemble that takes into account aspects of individual singing qualifications and contributes to the artistic profile of the region. Frieder Bernius acted as artistic director until 2003. As a result, the ensemble has worked regularly with various renowned conductors such as Rupert Huber, Bruno Weil, Christopher Moulds, Hans Zender, Reinhard Goebel, Peter Neumann, Robin Gritton and Sylvain Cambreling. Since October 2008, the Austrian composer and conductor Prof. Rupert Huber has been the new artistic director of the ChorWerk Ruhr.
The composition of the choir varies between 16 and 100 singers, depending on the composition of the work and the different stylistic or performance-related requirements. This has resulted in a pool of more than 180 choristers, with whom the ChorWerk Ruhr has rehearsed more than 50 projects and performed them in over 100 concerts and performances.
In its numerous projects, the ChorWerk Ruhr has developed a wide range of choral literature and continues to pursue the goal of passing on the entire stylistic diversity of vocal music both to its own singers and to the audience at the highest possible artistic level. In cooperation with renowned orchestras such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Ensemble Resonanz, the musikFabrik NRW, the Schönberg Ensemble Amsterdam, the Cappella Coloniensis, the Ensemble Modern, the Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden and Freiburg, the ChorWerk Ruhr inspires its audience again and again.
The often extraordinarily demanding a cappella projects are of particular importance for the choral sound and the vocal qualification. The ChorWerk Ruhr has been able to steadily expand its success with the press and the public, and the ensemble has now established itself as one of the high-quality artistic trademarks of the region. This is also proven by the frequent recordings by WDR and DLF as well as the co-productions with the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and the Ruhr Piano Festival. Every year the ChorWerk Ruhr cooperates and co-produces in a special way with the RuhrTriennale.
The ChorWerk Ruhr is a project of Kultur Ruhr GmbH with the support of the Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Fund for Regional Development.
