Dennis Schuler

Composer

Biography:

Dennis Schuler, born in Geneva, first studied drums and classical percussion, then composition with Nicolas Bolens, Eric Gaudibert, Michael Jarrell and Emanuel Nunes. After graduating in 2006, he was the first Swiss to receive first prize at the Concours International de Composition de Musiques Sacrées de Friborg in 2008. During the 2010/2011 academic year, Denis Schuler was Artist-in-Residence at the Swiss Institute in Rome. In 2013 he received a study visit to Cairo from the cultural foundation Pro Helvetia. He also works as a curator and, as part of his work with the Ensemble Vide and the Swiss Institute in Rome (and others), is particularly concerned with concert programming, spatial performances and the reception behavior of listeners.

Schuler follows atypical paths and draws his inspiration from different areas: traditional music, improvisation, notated music. He finds his own style in the collection and confrontation of very different influences. In dealing with rhythm and sound, he explores the limits of hearing and the approach to silence. His music demands the ability to listen attentively and to be aware of breathing and noise.

Denis Schuler received several commissions for compositions. His works were u. a. premiered by Orchester de chambre de Genève, Ensemble Vortex, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Glass Farm Ensemble, Nederland Kamerkoor, Tetraflûtes, Quatuor Bela and Ensemble Vide. He also composed incidental music for the Zurich Schauspielhaus, the Tojo in Bern, the Théâtre de Carouge and the Théâtre du Grütli in Geneva.
