German Symphony Orchestra Berlin

Biography:

That has changed since it was founded German Symphony Orchestra Berlin (DSO Berlin) made a name for a well thought-out and innovative program design, the commitment to contemporary music and its stylistic confidence. Founded in 1946 as the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, it was renamed the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1956 and has had its current name since 1993.

The orchestra gained an excellent reputation in Berlin and on numerous tours, with radio and television productions and with important conductors whom it knew how to retain. Ferenc Fricsay was the first chief conductor to define standards in the repertoire, in the ideal sound and in media presence. In 1964 the young Lorin Maazel assumed artistic responsibility, followed in 1982 by Riccardo Chailly and in 1989 by Vladimir Ashkenazy. Kent Nagano was appointed Principal Conductor in 2000. Since his departure in 2006 he has been associated with the orchestra as honorary conductor.

From 2007 to 2010, Ingo Metzmacher, as Nagano's successor, made a decisive impact on the capital's concert life with a progressive program and consistent commitment to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Since September 2012, the 35-year-old North Ossetian Tugan Sokhiev has been the seventh chief conductor and artistic director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. As early as the 2010/2011 season he held the title of Designated Principal Conductor.

In addition to its concerts in Berlin, the DSO is present in numerous guest performances in international music life. The orchestra has made guest appearances in the major concert halls of Europe, North and South America, the Near, Middle and Far East. The DSO is also present worldwide with numerous excellent CD recordings. In 2011, it received the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for its production of Kaija Saariaho's L'amour de loin, conducted by Kent Nagano.

The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin is an ensemble of the Rundfunk Orchester und Chore GmbH (roc berlin). Its shareholders are Deutschlandradio, the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of Berlin and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg.
