Biography:
The Ensemble Modern (EM), founded in 1980 and based in Frankfurt am Main since 1985, is one of the world's leading ensembles for new music. The ensemble currently brings together 19 soloists from eight different countries, whose origins form the cultural background of this formation.
The Ensemble Modern is known for its way of working and organization that is unique in the world: there is no artistic director; Projects, co-productions and financial matters are decided and carried out together. Its unmistakable range of programs includes music theatre, dance and video projects, chamber music, ensemble and orchestral concerts.
Tours and guest performances take the Ensemble Modern to around 100 concerts a year at renowned festivals and venues worldwide, such as the Salzburg Festival, the Musikfest Berlin, the Lincoln Center Festival in New York, the Festival d'Automne à Paris, the Lucerne Festival, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Berlin Concert Hall, the Essen Philharmonic and the Baden-Baden Festival Hall. Subscription and workshop concerts take place in the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Oper Frankfurt. Every year, the musicians work on around 70 new works in close cooperation with the composers, including around 20 world premieres.
Since 2000, audio and video productions by Ensemble Modern have been published under the Ensemble Modern Medien label. Under the umbrella of the International Ensemble Modern Academy, founded in 2003, the musicians of the Ensemble Modern offer various training programs such as the master’s degree in contemporary music, master classes, composition seminars and education projects.
The Ensemble Modern is funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation, the City of Frankfurt and, via the Deutsche Ensemble Akademie eV, by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art, the Deutsche Bank Foundation and the GVL. Selected projects of the Ensemble Modern are made possible by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain. hr2-kultur is the cultural partner of Ensemble Modern.
