Festival Strings Lucerne

The Festival Strings Lucerne are among the most important chamber orchestras in Europe. They were founded as a string orchestra with harpsichord in 1956 by the Viennese violin legend Wolfgang Schneiderhan and the Swiss conductor and violinist Rudolf Baumgartner. Since 2012, the Festival Strings Lucerne have been further developing the warmth of the Austro-Hungarian string sound tradition under artistic director Daniel Dodds. He directs the ensemble from the concertmaster's chair, has expanded the scope of the ensemble and added instruments as needed to enable performances of the medium-sized symphonic repertoire, but also works in smaller formations known as Festival Strings Lucerne Chamber Players occur.

The ensemble offers a wide-ranging repertoire from baroque music to contemporary music in its own concert series at the KKL Lucerne and as a guest at the Lucerne Festival, and performs regularly in European concert halls. Since its founding, it has premiered over a hundred works by composers from various cultural backgrounds.
