Biography:
Gabriela ortiz, born in 1964, first studied in Mexico and later in London, where she did her doctorate on electroacoustic music at City University. Today she lives in the USA, but also holds a chair in composition in Mexico City. Ortiz is one of the most internationally renowned composers in her country.
Influences from the western avant-garde stand alongside elements of Mexican folk music, jazz and improvisation. Last but not least, her music theater works address serious problems in Mexican society such as poverty, drugs and violence.
