George Aperghis

Composer

Biography:

Georges Aperghis, born in Athens in 1945 as the son of a sculptor and a painter, is largely self-taught: he was interested in both painting (he exhibited his paintings at the age of twelve) and music, which he discovered through radio and private piano lessons. In 1963 he moved to Paris, where he gave up painting in favor of music and began studying composition.

His first works are characterized by serial techniques and the innovations of Iannis Xenakis. He was also particularly interested in the works of John Cage and Mauricio Kagel before he turned his attention to musical theater. In 1971 he created his first music theater piece, La tragique histoire du nécromancien Hieronimo et de son miroir, for two female voices, lute and cello. In 1976 he founded the multimedia theater group 'Atelier Théâtre' in Bagnolet, a suburb of Paris.

Et Musique‹ (ATEM). The performances are inspired by everyday life, the social events are transposed into a poetic, often absurd and satirical world, and the action only takes on its final form during rehearsals with the collaboration of musicians and actors. Aperghis wrote numerous other music theater pieces, compositions for solo instruments and voices as well as chamber music and orchestral works.
