Biography:
The composer Helmut Lachenmann was born in Stuttgart in 1935. From 1955 to 1958 he studied at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart with Jürgen Uhde (piano) and with Johann Nepomuk David (theory and counterpoint). From 1958 to 1960 he studied composition with Luigi Nono in Venice.
His first public appearance as a composer was in 1962 at the Venice Biennale and at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt. In 1965 he worked in the electronic studio of the University of Ghent. From 1966 to 1970 he taught music theory at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart. In 1968 Lachenmann received the composition prize of the city of Stuttgart.
From 1970 to 1976 he was a lecturer in music at the Ludwigsburg University of Education, and from 1972 to 1973 Lachenmann held master classes in composition at the Basel Music Academy. From 1976 to 1981 he was a professor of composition at the Hanover University of Music. Since 1978 Lachenmann has lectured several times at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and at the "Cursos Latinoamericanos de musica contemporanea" in Brazil and the Dominican Republic, and has taught in many other countries. From 1981 to 1999 he was professor of composition at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart.
In 1997 the Music Prize of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation Lachenmann was awarded. In 2001 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Hanover University of Music. In 2005 he was composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival and in 2008 Fromm Visiting Professor at Harvard University.
