James Avery

Biography:

James Avery is a founding member and artistic director of the Ensemble SurPlus. A Kansas native, the pianist and conductor received his education at his home state university, where he studied with Roy Hamlin Johnson [piano] and Robert Baustian, and at Indiana University with Walter Robert [piano] and Tibor Kozma.

He won the Gaudeamus competition for interpreters of contemporary music. From 1980 to 2004 he was professor of piano at the Freiburg Music Academy and from 1986 to 1988 guest professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
