Biography:
James Dillon, born in Glasgow in 1950, studied music, acoustics and linguistics in London. As a composer he is self-taught. In the early 1970s he studied Indian music with Punita Gupta. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Dillon was repeatedly invited to Darmstadt to present new works. In 1982 he received the Kranichsteiner Music Prize, in 1986 he was a guest lecturer at the State University of New York in Stony Brooks.
His String Quartet No. 1 was premiered by the Arditti Quartet at the 1983 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Since then, the Arditti Quartet has remained closely associated with the composer. All subsequent Dillon quartets were premiered by the Arditti Quartet and included in their concert repertoire.
James Dillon has been a guest lecturer at many universities worldwide and received the title of Distinguished International Visitor from New York University (2001-02). In 2003 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Huddersfield. He currently resides in London and Minneapolis and is Professor of Composition at the University of Minnesota.
