Composer
Juan Manuel Marrero, born in 1970 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, is a European composer with a PhD, specializing in aesthetics, sciences and technologies of the arts. In 1995 he settled permanently in France, where he became part of the Paris music scene, the center of which was and is the famous Ircam initiated by Pierre Boulez. There he composed a number of works that were performed by important orchestras, soloists and ensembles. He has received numerous international awards and receives composition commissions from many parts of the world. His works are performed in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. In addition to instrumental works, his music also includes vocal, scenic and electro-acoustic works. He has had a long career as a lecturer and researcher and has published a large number of articles and essays. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and a tenured professor of the French Republic.
Marrero has received, among others, the following international prizes and awards: First Prize for Composition from Mahidol (Thailand, 2006); First Prize for Composition from the City of New York (USA, 2003); First Prize for Composition from the SGAE, Madrid (Spain, 2002); Concours biennal de composition acousmatique Métamorphoses, Ohain (Belgium, 2002); Concours international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges (France, 2002); Composition Prize of the City of Udine (Italy, 2000); Jovenes compositores SGAE, Madrid (Spain, 2000), etc.
His music is commissioned and performed by a wide variety of institutions: Lincoln Center, New York (USA); Ircam and Center Georges Pompidou, Paris (France); National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana (Cuba); Teatro San Giorgio, Udine (Italy); Mahidol Theater, Bangkok (Thailand); Instituto de Artes, São Paolo (Brazil); Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City (Mexico); Cakarjev Cathedral Center, Ljubljana (Slovenia); Teatro Pérez Galdós, Las Palmas (Spain); Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas (Spain); Auditorio Nacional de Música, Madrid (Spain) as well as various theaters and concert halls in Belgium, Japan and China.
