Biography:
Julius Berger, born in Augsburg in 1954, studied at the Musikhochschule in Munich with Walter Reichardt and Fritz Kiskalt, at the Mozarteum Salzburg with Antonio Janigro (as whose assistant he worked from 1979–1982), at the University of Cincinnati (USA) with Zara Nelsova and on the occasion of a master class by Mstislav Rostropovic. First in Würzburg, then later in Saarbrücken, Mainz and Augsburg, he promotes top young people in his field. Since 1992 he has also taught a class at the International Summer Academy at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
His performances and CDs of works for cello and piano by Paul Hindemith, works by Ernst Bloch, Max Bruch, Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann and Edward Elgar have attracted worldwide attention. Julius Berger also made a name for himself through his great commitment to contemporary compositions; internationally acclaimed CD recordings were made. Julius Berger is artistic director of the Eckelshausener Musiktage and the Asiago Festival (Italy). As President, he directs the International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart Augsburg and the International Instrumental Competition Markneukirchen. International jury work led him i.a. to the competitions in Salzburg (Mozart), Kronberg (Casals), Markneukirchen, Munich, Warsaw. In 2009, Julius Berger was elected a full member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature.
