Catherine Weber

Biography:

Catherine Weber was born in Bern. She studied piano with Jürg Wyttenbach, Urs Peter Schneider and Erika Radermacher. Of the many master classes she attended, those with György Kurtág and Pauline Oliveros were the most influential. The lessons in Tai Chi and Kung Fu with Lianzhen Jing were also essential for her career. In 1987 Katharina Weber was awarded the Soloist Prize of the Swiss Association of Musicians and in 2001 the Grand Music Prize of the Canton of Bern.

As a performer, she performs both older and contemporary music. She works closely with composers, e.g. with György Kurtág, Sándor Veress and Younghi Pagh-Paan. There are numerous radio and CD recordings with her. As an improviser, she often takes part in interdisciplinary projects. Recorded CDs with Barry Guy and Fred Frith. Since 1994 she has been composing solo, chamber music, choral and orchestral pieces. Katharina Weber teaches piano and improvisation at the Bern Conservatory Music School and at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB).
