Biography:
Manfred Schulze, born in Schweizerthal (Saxony) in 1934, was initially a miner and cyclist. As a baritone saxophonist and clarinetist, he played in various groups before founding the Manfred Schulze Wind Quintet, later the Manfred Schulze Formation (own compositions and arrangements), which, in addition to jazz concerts, also played the most demanding music in the dance hall. The Berlin Improvisation Quartet (later Improvisation Trio), which was founded together with Hermann Keller, performed at all the important GDR jazz event series, in West Berlin and the old Federal Republic – also at a number of New Music festivals. He died in 2010 after a long illness.
