Biography:

Martin Smurf, born on December 3, 1947 in Aarau, began studying music in Zurich in 1968 (clarinet, piano, conducting, theory and composition). Studies with Boris Blacher in Berlin followed in 1974. Since 1977 he has been a professor of music theory at the Zurich University of the Arts, and from 1991 also of group improvisation. Until 1980 he was mainly active as a composer in the field of serious music, after which he returned to improvised music.

Since the late 1980s, Martin Schlumpf has been active in a variety of ways at the interface between composition and improvisation in a new »postmodern« environment with a strong focus on rhythm.
