Biography:
Maurice Sotelo, born in Madrid in 1961, received his first musical training at the conservatory there. In 1987 he completed his composition studies with Francis Burt at the Musikhochschule in Vienna, where he also attended the class of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and studied conducting with Karl Österreicher. He then received a working grant from the Alban Berg Foundation and had the privilege of being one of Luigi Nono's last students, who intensively shaped his artistic understanding. It is Sotelo's central concern to penetrate deeper and deeper into the »micro qualities of sound«. As a result, he intensively researched the musical roots of his homeland, which he found in cante jondo, the genuinely raw flamenco singing, and thus brought a new coloration with a strong influence into the contemporary music scene.
