Composer
Biography:
Moritz Eggert was born in Heidelberg in 1965, the center of his life is now Munich. As a composer, he likes to sit between all stools, sometimes provocative and challenging, sometimes intoxicating and inspiring. He is just as interested in melody and emotionality as he is in experimental or performative sound worlds - for him one is not opposed to the other. Through projects that are much discussed in the media, such as The depth of space or the opera Freak (together with Christoph Schlingensief) he constantly tries to undermine the common image of New Music as a matter for an expert audience only. In addition to his focus on music theater, for which Eggert has written 19 operas to date, he likes to cultivate chamber music or more experimental nuances, for example in his song cycle New poet loves or his piano cycle fortepiano. His current projects include new operas for Bonn and Vienna, several instrumental concerts and the theatrical opening of the Beethovenfest Bonn 2022 together with Axel Brüggemann.
As a pianist, singer, conductor and performer, Eggert is committed to both contemporary and classical repertoire. While still a student he founded the aDevantgarde festival together with Sandeep Bhagwati, which still takes place regularly. For the new music newspaper he runs the »Bad Blog of Musick«, the most widely read blog on contemporary music in Germany. Eggert is also present in the media, e.g. B. as a fast-talking opera guide in "Opera for the Impatient" (ZDF) or in film documentaries such as "Epochs of Music History" (BBC/ARTE). He teaches composition at the Munich University of Music and Theater and has been President of the German Composers' Association since 2020.
