Rai National Symphony Orchestra

Biography:

The  Rai National Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1994 by Georges Prêtre and Giuseppe Sinopoli and emerged from the radio orchestras of Turin, Milan, Rome and Naples. In February 2004, the orchestra founded a concert series with contemporary music (»Rai Nuova Musica«), which also plays premieres in symphony concerts and chamber music evenings. Concert tours take the orchestra i.a. to Japan, Germany, England, Ireland, France, Spain, to the Festival de Música de Canarias, to Greece, South America, Austria and Switzerland.

1996-2001 Eliahu Inbal was Honorary Conductor, 1998-2002 Jeffrey Tate was Principal Guest Conductor; both were awarded the Abbiati Prize (1997 and 1998), Italy's most important critics' prize. In September 2001, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos became chief conductor; in September 2002 Jeffrey Tate took over the post of Honorary Conductor; in September 2003 Gianandrea Noseda became Principal Guest Conductor. The orchestra has also given concerts with important conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Mstislav Rostropovich, Myung-Whun Chung, Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Yuri Ahronovich, Dmitri Kitaenko, Alexander Lazarev, Valerij Gergiew, Lawrence Forster and Gerd Albrecht .
