composer & conductor
Biography:
Peter Eötvös sets the tone in the new music scene – not only as a composer, but also as a conductor and teacher.
Born in Hungary, he studied at the Budapest Music Academy and the Cologne University of Music and played regularly with the Stockhausen Ensemble between 1968 and 1976. From 1971 to 1979 he worked at the studio for electronic music at West German Radio. Crucial to his further musical career was his encounter with Pierre Boulez, who made him musical director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in 1978, a position that Peter Eötvös held for 13 years.
In 1991 he founded his own institution: the International Eötvös Institute, where young conductors and composers are prepared for their future tasks in concert life. He also served as a professor at the music academies in Karlsruhe [1992-1998, 2002-2003] and Cologne [1998-2001]. In addition, Eötvös was and is permanent guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Budapest Festival and the Hungarian National Philharmonic, as well as the major international opera houses. Since 1994 he has conducted the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Hilversum.
As a composer he wrote among others "Chinese Opera" [1986], "Psychokosmos" [1993], "Atlantis" [1995], "Shadows" [1996], "Two Monologues" [1998], "Replica" [1998], " zeroPoints” [1999] and the operas “Le Balcon” [2001] and “Three Sisters” [1996/1997]. For the latter, Eötvös received the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award in 2002.
