Peter Hirsch

Dirigent

Biography:

Peter Hirsch, born in Cologne in 1956, received his first piano lessons at the age of five and his first theory and counterpoint studies at the age of ten with Johannes G. Fritsch. He studied piano with Alfons Kontarsky and conducting with Wolfgang von der Nahmer in Cologne and then became assistant to Michael Gielen at the Frankfurt Opera. From 1984 to 87 he was first Kapellmeister there and conducted e.g. the premiere of Hans Zenders Stephen Climax. In these and the following years, Peter Hirsch directed numerous opera productions, for example at the Nederlandse Opera, English and Scottish Opera and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

The encounter, cooperation and friendship with Luigi Nono was important. In 1985 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan Prometheus, the following year he conducted the premiere of Resonance erranti in Cologne. Since then he has always been committed to Luigi Nono's work and in 2006 conducted the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in the world premiere of the posthumous fragment he had edited himself Julius Fucik. The preoccupation with modernity made him look more and more for the new in the old.

Peter Hirsch was and is a frequent guest, e.g. with almost all German radio orchestras, the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Orchester National de Belgique Bruxelles, Berner Sinfonieorchester, Staatsorchester Mainz, Camerata Salzburg, the Munich Philharmonic and the Klangforum Wien, Collegium Novum Zürich and Ensemble Contrechamps in Geneva.
