Biography:
Peter Rundel was born in Friedrichshafen in 1958. He studied violin with Igor Ozim and Ramy Shevelov in Cologne, Hanover and New York, conducting with Michael Gielen and Peter Eötvos and received private lessons from the composer Jack Brimberg in New York. From 1984-96 he was a violinist with the Ensemble Modern. Since his debut as a conductor in 1987, he has been one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation, with a focus on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
There is a constant collaboration with Peter Rundel with the Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble Recherche and the Klangforum Wien. He conducted the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, the RSO Stuttgart, the RSO Wien, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, the RSO Saarbrücken, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Orchestra della Toscana, the Asko Ensemble (Amsterdam) and the Ictus Ensemble (Brussels).
Since the 1998/99 season, Peter Rundel has been coordinating chief conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra, Antwerp, together with Philippe Herreweghe. Since the 1999/2000 season he has also been musical director of the Wiener Taschenoper. In addition to his career as a conductor, Peter Rundel also appears as a solo violinist, and lately he has been particularly interested in compositions by Nikolai Roslavets, Luigi Nono, Morton Feldman, John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi. Peter Rundel has received numerous awards for his recordings of music from the 20th century, including the German Record Critics' Prize several times, the Grand Prix du Disque and a Grammy Award nomination.
