Composer
Biography:
Philippe Manoury Considered one of the most important French composers and a researcher and pioneer in the field of music with live electronics. Despite his intensive training as a pianist and composer, he sees himself as an autodidact. Accordingly, he began composing on his own in parallel to his first musical lessons, and at the age of 19 he was already represented with his own works at important festivals for new music. The premiere of his piano work Cryptophonos by Claude Helffer helped him achieve his breakthrough in 1974.
From 1981 he worked at IRCAM in Paris together with the mathematician Miller Puckette on MAX-MSP, a programming language for interactive live electronics. The interaction between acoustic instruments and computer-generated sounds has occupied him ever since in his artistic work and his music-theoretical texts. The moment of interaction also characterizes his approach to the large orchestra: he turns it into a sound laboratory in which new possibilities of playing together are tested.
Philippe Manoury has received numerous awards for his work. The French Ministry of Culture appointed him Officier des Arts et des Lettres in 2014. He is a member of the Honorary Committee of the Franco-German Fund for Contemporary Music / Impulse New Music. He has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts since summer 2015.
