A mental exercise... without denying the sound
On Dietrich Mast's piano works
"Interlocked" in the sense of an interlocking structure is an extremely important metaphor for describing Dietrich Mast's music. Their content, their spirituality is closely interwoven with the musical structure.
»Interlocked« means »polymorphic«, but again not, because not all of the musical constituents, such as articulatory parameters or the texture, are consistently integrated into Mast's interlocking structures, but the harmonics are even more so in the micro range. The melodic element, generating harmonies, is always interlocked with the rhythm via the polyphony. In Mast's music, interlocking means the close, spiritual relationship that constitutes the music.
tuating elements to each other.
From the polyphonic relatedness of the melodic, the harmonic develops, which in its tendency to whole tones produces synthetic chords as its basic building block, which are reminiscent of the Futurism of the early 20th century, such as Alexander Scriabin or Nikolai A. Roslavez. Not least because of this, Dietrich Mast submitted an analytically profound musicological dissertation based on the fundamentals of Scriabin's music a long time ago.
But Mast's music follows its own logic, which, since it is autonomous, goes far beyond that. About a second layer of harmony formation: Delicately indicated twelve-tone structures, but always in a melodic context facing the listener, form this layer.
