Musica Viva: Festival 2008

Top-class orchestras, choirs and soloists performed together at the beginning of 2008 for the first Musica Viva Festival. The present selection of photographs shows perspectives and possible lines of tradition. "Symphonie L'Œuvre" (1937/38) by Karl Amadeus Hartmann, a plea for freedom of thought and sound, becomes the stimulus for contemporary confessional music: Matthew Pintschers "Hérodiade-Fragmente" as well as Aribert Reimann's "Cantus" with the soloist Jorg Widman, who is also present as a composer - with "Armonica", a fast-paced, sophisticated study of the sound aspects of accordion and glass harp.

Two works from around 1970 are made into symphonic outer movements on another CD: “Antikhthon” by Iannis Xenakis and "Uaxuctum" by Giacinto Scelsi. With uncompromising hardness they enclose something new - "La navette" by James Dillon becomes a thoughtful Adagio and Beat Furrers Piano concerto to the scherzo shadow play.

chamber music by Kaija saariahoLiza Lim and  Rebecca Saunders leads to the breathless "countdown" of Adriana Holszky, based on diary notes by a homeless writer code-named Ver du Bois (“Woodworm”). The “pilgrimages” of Chaya Czernowin, freely adapted from a Moomin story by Tove Jansson.

Traditional music from Egypt and Iran thwarts and enriches the program. It opens with a major work by Karlheinz Stockhausen: "Mixtur" in the new version from 2003. Inexhaustibly rich visions of sound and noise, which the composer has also linguistically and imaginatively defined as "color glissandi", "plucked clouds", "clinking surfaces", "slumbering color seams".
