Michał Dobrzyński's conception of composing follows the idea of a quasi-imaginary scene. This "scenic" is too diverse to warrant the restrictive label "opera composer." Although his musical language is rich in emotions and, moreover, highly expressive, the break with what is commonly perceived as "scenic" according to the traditional Aristotelian conception is evident. The epic repeatedly interrupts the scenic plot. In Dobrzyński's work, this element less determines the dramaturgy than, as a kind of virtual stage design, lends the semantics of his music a more tactile quality.
Polish composer Michał Dobrzyński (*1980) belongs to the generation of young artists selected by Krzysztof Penderecki and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki for the "Young Composers in Memory of Fryderyk Chopin" program. Dobrzyński is a professor of composition at the Bydgoszcz Music Academy. His works are part of the repertoire of outstanding soloists, conductors, and renowned ensembles; they have been performed in Poland, as well as in the USA, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Italy, Moldova, South Korea, Malta, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, China, Cyprus, and North Macedonia. Michał Dobrzyński has won prizes in numerous composition competitions. Operas occupy a special place in the composer's oeuvre. In recent years they have been performed more than 30 times on many stages, such as the Estonian National Opera, MuTh (Vienna), in Vilnius, the Warsaw Chamber Opera, the Baltic Opera in Gdansk, the Krakow Opera and the Polish Royal Opera.
Audiences have often rewarded the operas with standing ovations. Dobrzyński's operas are also appreciated by critics: Tango based on Slawomir Mrożek's drama of the same name was awarded the "Opera Revelation of the Year 2017" in the category "Best Music". In 2024, the world premiere of Dobrzyński's latest opera took place at the Polish Royal Opera. Hi§tory based on the manuscripts (including previously unpublished fragments) of Witold Gombrowicz's drama History which were personally made available to the composer by Rita Gombrowicz (the writer's widow). Operette, an earlier opera by Dobrzyński (also based on the drama by Gombrowicz), was broadcast worldwide from Vienna by ARTE Concert (translated into five languages).
