infotext:
Markus Bellheim His recording of all of Olivier Messiaen's piano compositions begins with a main work in which the elements important for further work interact in an exemplary manner: the Franciscan-influenced mysticism, synaesthesia, the love for the voices of nature and the sharpening of awareness of foreign musical cultures with their diverse melody and rhythm. Exotic colors dominate in the “gaze of the prophets, shepherds and wise men”, in the “gaze of the spirit of joy” the oriental origin of Gregorian chant becomes comprehensible. The “Vingt regards” were written in Paris in 1944, in the months leading up to the liberation of the city. They are a document of expectant contemporaneity, an expression of a restless era that was grasping life anew and was hungry for the future.
