“Dark Voices”, the eleventh CD of the Wohlhauser Edition on NEOS, contains nine works for various ensemble combinations. All compositions were recorded by the “Duo Simolka–Wohlhauser”, with the composer himself participating alongside the soprano Christine Simolka as a baritone, pianist and percussionist.
The texts set to music are almost exclusively poems written by René Wohlhauser. Only in Une nuit toute passionnée does he use excerpts from a letter from Simone de Beauvoir to Jean-Paul Sartre.
Some of the works, such as In pure being, Miramsobale, Thrown acrobats and also A passionate night all night have already appeared on previous CDs of the Wohlhauser Edition, but here in versions with new instrumentation. This impressively shows the versatility of René Wohlhauser's compositional work.
