Rohan of Saram

Cello

Biography:

Rohan of Saram was a member of the Arditti Quartet until 2005. Today he works with various artists, friends and composers; together with colleagues from the most diverse musical backgrounds, he combines music from various periods of music history and parts of the world. Rohan de Saram performs with the most important orchestras of Europe, Canada, the USA and the former Soviet Union under conductors such as John Barbirolli, Adrian Boult, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa and William Steinberg, as well as with composers conducting their own works. He has worked with Kodaly, Shostakovich, Poulenc and Walton as well as with important contemporary composers who have written pieces for him: e.g. Pousseur, Xenakis, Berio and Hosokawa.

After the UK premiere of Ritorno degli Snovidenia Berio said about him: »Your interpretation of Return is great, plus your tone, perfect intonation, phrasing and bowing make you a great performer of any kind of music." Berio then wrote his for him sequence no XIV, which is based on the rhythms of the Kandyan drum of Sri Lanka (an instrument Rohan de Saram has played since childhood in Sri Lanka) as a tribute to Rohan de Saram. Hosokawa wrote his Second Cello Concerto for him, singing, which was premiered in 2009 with great success by the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln conducted by Emilio Pomárico.
