Biography:
Stephen Asbury, a fellow at Oxford University and the Royal College of Music, studied conducting with Oliver Knussen; In 1990 further studies followed in the USA, e.g. at the Tanglewood Music Center. He became Deputy Director of the Oxford Contemporary Music Festival and has conducted numerous world premieres as well as studio and concert recordings with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
He was Associate Director of New Music at Tanglewood; In 2001 he became chief conductor of the ensemble ›Bit 20‹ in Oslo. Stefan Asbury works with numerous ensembles and orchestras: DSO Berlin, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Opéra de Lyon, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Avanti!, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln. In 2004 he was awarded the BMW Music Theater Prize (for the premiere of Rob Zuidam's opera Freeze). His production Les espaces acoustiques received the German Record Critics' Prize.
