Biography:
Thomas Ruge, born in Bremen in 1963, studied cello in Berlin, most recently with Ottomar Borwitzky at the Karajan Academy. While still a student he was solo cellist with the European Youth Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and in Aix-en-Provence, among others - under famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein.
After several years with the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (since 1984) and with the Berlin Philharmonic (various tours with Herbert von Karajan), Thomas Ruge became first auditionist with the Munich Philharmonic in 1991; in 2001 he was appointed second solo cellist; he is also the first solo cellist of the Munich Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. From 2 to 1 he appeared regularly in concerts and on tours with the 1989 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. He also plays as a solo cellist with the European Union Opera, the Philharmonic String Soloists and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In the Berlin Philharmonic he was the soloist in cello concertos by Dvořák, Tchaikovsky and Brahms.
He has already been awarded the Brahms Society's ›Brahms Prize‹ twice.
Thomas Ruge is a member of the Munich Philharmonic String Sextet and a founding member of the Mullova Ensemble and the Nadolny Cello Quartet. Since 2003 he has been a founding member of Claudio Abbado's Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
