The Tölz Boys' Choir was founded in 1956 by the conductor and singing teacher Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden and celebrated its 2006th anniversary in 50. The choir has also been rehearsing in the state capital of Munich since 1971. There, more than 200 boys are trained in four levels by the founder and choir director Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, the artistic director Ralph Ludewig as well as seven other singing teachers and later supervised in their own men's choir. The basis of the work is the joy of singing, coupled with the creativity, spontaneity and self-discipline of the boys. After completing their training, they sing at up to 250 concerts or opera performances worldwide every year with music from the Middle Ages to the modern age. One of the focal points is church music from the Baroque and Classical eras. The soloists of the Tölz Boys' Choir achieved fame with the roles of the Three Boys from Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte (12 CD recordings). The Tölzer Knabenchor gives guest performances in Japan, China, Israel, the USA and in almost all European countries. Well-known conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Sergiu Celibidache, John Eliot Gardiner, Maris Jansons, Herbert von Karajan, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Georg Solti and Marcello Viotti have already worked with the Tölz Boys' Choir. The Tölz Boys' Choir received numerous awards for recordings, e.g. Special prices for that Orff Schulwerk, the German Record Prize for Bachs Christmas Oratorio (1973), the French record prize for Mozart's opera Apollo and Hyacinthus, the French Diapason d'Or and the Echo Klassik from the Deutsche Phono-Akademie Berlin for the Penitential Psalms of David by Orlando di Lasso (2003).
